Biography

Callie Cooper is a soprano in the Washington D.C. area. She is honored to serve as the Ceremonial Singer at Arlington National Cemetery. For the past three seasons she has been an Emerging Artist at the Sewanee Summer Music Festival Operafest directed by Laura Brooks Rice. Other recent credits include the Source Song Festival and the Berkshire High Peaks Festival. She was recently presented in recital on the Millennium Stage at the Kennedy Center for the Arts by the Asian American Musical Society. Callie earned her Masters of Music in Opera Performance from Wichita State University and studied with bass-baritone Alan Held. She completed her Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities. During her studies she was a Schuessler Vocal Arts Fellow and a Presidential Scholar. Additionally she was awarded an Undergraduate Research Grant from the College of Liberal Arts and presented her project for the UMN Board of Regents.

Other honors include First Place at the Glenn Miller Birthplace Society Scholarship Competition, First Place Student Category at the Opera Susquehanna Vocal Competition, Second Place Thursday Musical Scholarship Competition. First Place in the Washington D.C. Chapter of the National Society of Arts and Letters Competition as well as an Encouragement award at the national level. She has also received an Career Grant from the Vieyra Foundation. She was also a Cadman Fine Arts Fellow, and a Ramsey Fine Arts Fellow at Wichita State University. Recently, she completed a certificate in the Fox Method, a trauma and nervous system informed approach to art. Callie is Life Stories™ certified by the creators of the Theatre Lab. She is also certified in the Lovetri Method ™ Level 1. Callie is currently completing the Barnes-Demazia Certificate in the Barnes Method on scholarship at The Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia.

Education

Master of Music in Opera Performance
During her time at Wichita State University, Callie sang the role of Hester Prynne in Lori Laitman’s new opera The Scarlett Letter. Additional credits include covering the title role of Carlisle Floyd’s Susannah for Wichita Grand Opera in a production featuring both Sam Ramey and Alan Held. She also sang the role of Arminda in Mozart’s La finta giardiniera.
Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance
While at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities, Callie was presented in recital by Opera Susquehanna. She also completed a research project and lecture recital about the origins of opera in America. She performed partial roles from The Tender Land and Street Scene in conjunction with her research.
